Introduction

Oliver Hazard Perry Middle School (Perry Middle School) is located in Providence Rhode Island. Perry middle school has a variety of ethnic background. More than the majority of the students in Perry Middle School are Spanish. Parents and school staff get together and work to getting there child involved more in there studies brings the student to the advantage to work harder. Perry Middle school works with many programs to make the students more interested in there work. Also there are the results on the teachers opinion, the student opinions, and the parents opinion towards the school. The opinions came from the SALT survey results form year of 2006-07. Perry Middle School is a very successful school, they have reached all of there targets from the no child left behind act.


Community Background

Oliver Hazard Perry Middle School has various of ethnic backgrounds. the smallest percentage is Native Americans only 1% of the students in Perry Middle School are Native American. 4% are Asian, 9% are White, and 16% are African-American. The biggest ethnic background in Perry Middle School is a total of 70% Hispanic students. The number of Hispanics is more than the majority of the amount the students. Also in the school there is a amount of 20% of bilingual students, and 80% are nonresidents.

Teachers and the school staff getting involve in the students life influences the student in many ways. Providenceschools.org is a website of the Providence school department, every school in providence is under this district. Under Perry Middle school they stated "When parents and guardians of Perry students work together with school administrators, guidance counselors, teachers, and all staff, there is a greater chance that each student will use their educational opportunities to the fullest extent possible" (Providence District, 2004-2006) basically in shorter words Perry Middle school and the Providence School district believe that when the Teachers and staff get involved with there family and there outside life, it brings the student closer to the teacher, and allows them to trust them.

Many programs are involved with Perry Middle school, a program that is involved with Perry Middle school is the Save the Bay program, the students get to go to trips with Save the Bay and it all relates to there science class. Perry Middle school works with Save the Bay and makes it relate to there daily work in there classes. Save the Bay gives the students the opportunity to get the kids involved with the hands on activities, it makes the work more interesting when you have examples and have worked with certain things to help you understand your work (Providence District, 2004-2006).

In Providence there is a total of 24,907 students that are in programs and only 1,840. In Providence they have a total of 338,187,246 dollars are put into these programs for the students. a estimate of 13,578 dollars is what one child would cause to get through the program. In Rhode Island there is a total of 142,785 students in a program, bringing the nmber of teachers up to 14,160. The amount of students and the amount of teachers cause there to be a total expenditures of 1,813,369,500 dollars being spent for all programs (U S Census).

Throught out the backround of Providence, and its community there are many families living under the poverty level. A total of 10.9% of Providence population is below poverty level. Looking into other towns in Rhode Island, Providence seems to have a very big percentage of the amount of families below poverty level. In Rhode Island there 142 families which is 7.8% of Rhode Island population is below poverty level. The total of Individual poverty level is higher a total of 566 families are under individual poverty levely making it 11.1% of Rhode Islands population (U S Census).


District Summary

On Information Works there was a section comparing the percentage of kids in the school and kids in Rhode Island the percentage of the amount of kids that watch TV in Perry Middle school is more than 60% of the kids, the amount of kids in Rhode Island that watch TV is above 40%. The amount of students that drink alcohol actually surprised me it was a high percentage just for Perry Middle School more than 20% of the students drink alcohol. Also kids in Perry Middle school do not get enough sleep about 50% of the kids in Perry middle school get 7 hours or less of sleep, and a average student should get at least 8 hours of sleep. Many kids are under stress that they believe they are to overweight, or underweight, or problems with acne, or to tall, or they are to short and about 35% of the students in Perry Middle School are going through this problem. All this research was done during the school SALT survey if school year of 2006-07 (Providence District, 2006-2007).

In the SALT survey they also showed results saying the amount of students that have went to a teacher and actually spoke to them about a issue they have in school, or family problems only 12% of the students report that they have went to a teacher, or another administrator in the school. Students have reported that not getting along with teachers has become a big problem, but the amount of students that have reported something being robbed by them more than one time is 32%. In Perry Middle school only 11% of the students have reported someone trying to sell them drugs (Rhode Island Middle Schools, 2006-2007).

In Perry middle school there has been a amount of 1412 incidents that has occurred in Perry Middle school, from number of assaults to students, teachers, bomb threats, students skipping class, Disorderly Conduct, fighting, sexual, and verbal harassment and vandalism. has caused the total of 1412 suspensions through year of 2006-07 (Safe and Supportive Schools: Incidents of Suspension, 2006-2007).

Oliver Hazard Middle School is under the Providence School Department. They say all Perry Middle Schools teachers have there best interest in there students. The Teachers in Perry Middle School also took a SALT survey and 70% of the teachers agree that teachers in the same grade work together well as a unit. Teachers also report that the spirit among the staff is really low and has the percentage of about 25%. 80% of the teachers agree that teachers do interact with their students in ways to show interest and respect. Teachers report that only about 40% of the students enjoy working together in class. In the year between 2006-07 (Safe and Supportive Schools: Connectedness, 2006-2007).


School Analysis


In Oliver Perry Middle School they have meet all there targets for the No Child Left Behind Act. In the proficiency score, English Language arts had a target score of 78.6, Mathematics was a target score of 64.1. In Perry Middle school they had a high target score for the total amount of the percent of students tested, in English Language art was a total of 95.0 percent, in Mathematics was a total of 95.0 percent. There attendance target score was 90 percent. Perry Middle school has is classified as "Moderately Performing" (2006-2007).

Conclusion

In conclusion Oliver Hazard Perry Middle school is a very successful school, meeting all of there targets, and having positive opinions from the teachers and parents. They also do have there downs for example there suspensions. Level of poverty in Providence is higher then other towns in Rhode Island, but when it comes to the No Child Left Behind Act Perry Middle School meets all there targets and shows what a good school Perry is. There was not many schools that meet there targets. SALT survey results had some positives and some negatives, but there was more positives then negatives. In my opinion I believe Oliver Hazard Middle School is a good Middle School.
